FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE About 1,000 participants are expected for the Missouri State University ROTC third annual Springfield Urban Warrior Challenge 12K beginning at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, May 3 in downtown Springfield. Off-duty Springfield Police Department officers and volunteers will be providing traffic direction throughout the route, which begins and ends at the green space between the Springfield Expo Center and the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau, 735 E. St. Louis. Groups of 100 participants will depart in waves every 10 minutes beginning at 8:30 a.m. Participants will stop along the route to participate in various obstacles at 16 different locations throughout the race. Roadways and intersections most affected are: John Q. Hammons and Grand
• Northbound traffic on John Q. Hammons Parkway from Grand will be blocked for the entire event (8:30 a.m. – roughly noon).
Boonville and Olive
Barricades will be used at Boonville and Olive to block traffic when the event begins.
Park Central West and Patton
Campbell and Olive
Cones will be placed in the east lane of northbound Campbell at the entrance to the parking garage, directing traffic to the west northbound lane. Traffic will be stopped as participants approach Campbell and Olive from the north.
Holland and Cherry
• Barricades will be utilized at John Q. Hammons and Madison to block southbound traffic. (8:30 a.m. – noon)
• Cross traffic will be blocked on Cherry to allow participants to cross Cherry and enter the Bear Park North Parking Garage.
John Q. Hammons and St. Louis
• As participants approach the location from the south to turn east onto St. Louis, traffic will be briefly stopped to allow participants to safely turn.
The City encourages motorists to use extra caution when driving in downtown Springfield Sunday morning, and to adjust travel plans accordingly. ### For more information about traffic control for this event, please contact Sgt.
