FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Springfield City Clerk Brenda Cirtin formally announces she will retire in August 2015. She and City Council have agreed upon a transition plan that includes appointing current assistant city clerk Anita Cotter as acting City Clerk, effective March 16. At that time, Cirtin will become City Clerk Emeritus and work on special projects to benefit the City. “I am honored to be selected as Acting City Clerk, and it is my intention to continue the high standards of professionalism and citizen service for which the City Clerk’s Office is known,” Cotter said. The City Clerk provides support to the Mayor and City Council and records the official minutes of the City Council meetings and several boards, commissions and committees. This position supervises office and clerical support functions, coordinates municipal elections with the County Clerk and serves as repository for all official City records. “I truly appreciate the opportunity City Council is giving me to work on some projects I’ve wanted to complete for many years,” Cirtin said of the transition plan. “These projects will help preserve the history of Springfield’s City Council. If we lose this history, we will never be able to recover it. With the advances in technology that have been made in the past years, this is an opportunity to capture this information electronically to ensure its posterity.” Cirtin achieved many accolades during her tenure, including being elected as president of the International Institute for Municipal Clerks (IIMC), serving from May 2012 to May 2013. In 2012, Cirtin was selected as Outstanding City Clerk by the Missouri City Clerks and Finance Officers Association (MoCCFOA.) Cotter has served as Assistant City Clerk since 1996. She is certified as a Missouri Municipal Clerk (MMC) through MoCCFOA and is a Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) through IIMC.
