City reaches resolution in Police-involved shooting litigation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The City of Springfield reached a resolution of a pre-suit settlement demand made by attorney Joshua Roberts on behalf of Eric David Butts. Butts was shot by former Springfield police officer Jason Shuck after he responded to a May 9, 2014 report of a person in the area with warrants. Shuck resigned from the Springfield Police force Aug. 14. During the mediation, both parties determined the expense of litigation would be minimized through the settlement. The City agreed to a settlement amount of $700,000 based on the potential cost of defense and medical expenses. As part of the agreement, the City and Shuck are released from liability, ensuring that the settlement truly brings the claim to a close, with no potential for further claims or litigation. The City’s General Fund reserves will cover the full cost of the settlement as the incident occurred prior to the City’s purchase of insurance. # # # For more information, contact: Cora Scott, Director of Public Information & Civic Engagement, 417-864-1009 (office) | 417-380-3352 (cell), [email protected]
