Mayor Pro Tem Ken McClure testifies on statewide TNC bill

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mayor Pro Tem Ken McClure testified today at the Missouri House General Laws Committee meeting in support of House Bill 130, a proposed statewide measure to pave the way for transportation network companies (TNCs) like Uber and Lyft to operate across Missouri. The bill is sponsored by Representative Kirk Mathews (R-Pacific).

McClure chaired the Springfield City Council Finance and Administration Committee and guided the local bill, which was approved last November. State lawmakers invited McClure to share details about Springfield’s process as they consider the statewide measure.

Springfield legislation required amending language in the City Code to allow TNCs to operate legally. Drivers of TNC, Taxi Cab or Airport limousines are no longer required to obtain a permit from the City. Instead, the company will be required to regulate the drivers, including doing a background check.

“We’re delighted that Springfield can serve as a model in Missouri in terms of allowing transportation companies, like Uber, to operate successfully. If we want to attract and keep young professionals, we need our community to support new technology and advances like this,” McClure said. “I appreciate the work of, my colleagues on Council and City staff, to come up with legislation that works for all parties.  This is a great example of what Springfield can accomplish when we work together.”
