Americans use 60,000 plastic bags every five minutes – single-use disposable bags that we mindlessly throw away. But where is “away?” Where do the bags and other plastics end up and at what cost to our environment, marine life and human health?
The documentary film “Bag it” will be presented 7-9 p.m., Thursday, April 18 at the Moxie Cinema, 305 S. Campbell, as part of the City’s Environmental Services department’s “Enviro Flick” movie series. The film was selected by staff as a vehicle for community discussion and education centered around plastic use and recycling. This screening is free to the public but seating is limited.
“We are excited to partner with the Moxie for our second Enviro Flick screening event,” says Environmental Services Sustainability and Market Development Coordinator Ashley Krug. “The Moxie is a fantastic organization with a built-in following of movie lovers and issue-conscious citizens who we are excited to engage with surrounding a very timely environmental topic – plastic.”
The movie screening will be followed by a community panel discussion featuring representatives from Midwest Fibre Sales and the City of Springfield Sanitary Landfill.

“Bag it” follows “everyman” Jeb Berrier as he navigates the plastic world. Jeb’s journey in this documentary film starts with simple questions: Are plastic bags really necessary? What are plastic bags made from? What happens to plastic bags after they are discarded? Jeb looks beyond plastic bags and discovers that virtually everything in modern society – from baby bottles to sports equipment, to dental sealants, to personal care products – is made with plastic. Through Jeb’s journey we see how our world’s plastic craze has begun to catch up with us and what we can do about it today.
