Independence Street to close nightly at Fremont Avenue intersection Oct. 27 – Nov. 8

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overnight closures of Independence Street at the Fremont Avenue intersection will begin Sunday, Oct. 27 through Friday, Nov. 8 to facilitate the construction of capacity and traffic flow improvements in the area. Nightly closures will begin at 8 p.m. and last until 7 a.m. the following morning.

The project will involve widening Independence Street, just east of the intersection, to provide dual westbound left-turn lanes. Crews will also restripe the Fremont Avenue Bridge over James River Freeway to four lanes, providing a dedicated northbound right turn lane, allowing through traffic on Fremont to funnel around those attempting to turn east onto Independence.

“This intersection serves as a gateway to a busy retail corridor along Independence. Our goal is to get this project completed prior to the holiday season so we can provide some relief to congestion in the area,” says Eric Claussen, Public Works Traffic Engineer over Operations.  “We expect these relatively low-budget intersection improvements will have a significant impact on traffic flow.”

This project is funded through the 2016 cycle of the 1/8-cent Transportation Sales Tax.
