Greenwood, Springfield Catholic basketball teams to be recognized tonight by City Council

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Springfield Mayor Ken McClure has invited two stand-out high school basketball teams to tonight’s City Council meeting to receive special recognition. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in Historic City Hall, 3rd floor Council Chambers.

The Greenwood High School Bluejays Boys Basketball team and their coach Darren Taylor are fresh off a state championship win – their first since 1942. Taylor was also named Class 2 Coach of the Year. The Blue Jays’ overall record was 29 wins and three losses and their 13 regular-season record was 22 wins and three losses, culminating with a championship win. Assistant Coach is Joe Black and teammates include: seniors Channing Carlson, Tate Dukewits, Hayden Hopkins, Garrett Litherland and John Sharp; sophomores Cooper Clark, Grant Harper, Aminu Mohammed, and Dominic Polly; and freshmen Zach Bailey, Seydina Diouf, Ryan Gibbons, Tommy Pinegar, and Will Schaller.

Springfield Catholic’s Fightin’ Irish finished their season strong with second place in the State Class 3 tournament – their first visit to the final four since 1984. Catholic is coached by Dustin Larsen and assistant coaches Kirk Chaffin, Mike Foley, and Denny Hunt. The Fightin’ Irish’s overall record was 29 wins and four losses and their 12 regular season record was 23 wins and three losses. Teammates include: seniors Jake Branham, Charlie O’Reilly, Michael Manzardo, Tyson Riley, Phillip Russell, Ron Fletcher, Tony Irons and Wallace Squibb.
