FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 20, 2020
On June 19, 2020, at 6:22 p.m., officers with the Springfield Police Department responded to the westbound lanes of I-44, just east of Glenstone, regarding a motor vehicle crash between an SUV and tractor-trailer. The driver of the Hyundai SUV, 26-year-old Dakota Burgess of Marshfield, was westbound on I 44 behind a 2018 Kenworth tractor-trailer, driven by 38-year-old Darrick Ward of Gravette Arkansas.
Ward had slowed for traffic congestion ahead and Burgess failed to slow and struck the trailer from behind. Burgess’ vehicle was lodged under the trailer as a result of the impact and Burgess was pronounced deceased at the scene. An infant was in a car seat in the back seat of the SUV and was unharmed. Next of kin has been notified. Chemical impairment is not suspected at this time, and the investigation is ongoing. This is the 9th fatality crash and 10th traffic fatality in Springfield during 2020.
