FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 6, 2020
On Oct. 5, 2020, at about 6:40 p.m., Springfield Police Officers were dispatched to 2020 East Bennett for the report of subjects possibly breaking into vehicles. As officers were arriving in the area, they were advised the subjects were leaving the location in a white box truck. An officer arriving in the area observed a vehicle fitting the description leaving the parking lot of the Walmart Neighborhood Market at 1320 South Glenstone. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the intersection of Portland and Fairway, but the vehicle failed to yield and continued traveling northbound on Fairway Avenue. The officer did not pursue the suspect vehicle.
A short time later, the vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Fairway and Bennett and collided with a 2011 Ford Escape driven by Beth Adams, a 66-year-old female from Springfield. Adams was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Next of kin notifications have been made.
Two suspects were taken into custody at the scene of the crash. The suspect driver was identified as Andrew Hammond, a 20-year-old male from Springfield, and the passenger was identified as Seth Rievley, a 20-year-old male from Springfield. The Greene County Prosecutor's Office filed charges of 1st Degree Tampering with a Motor Vehicle, Felony Fleeing, and Second-Degree Murder against Hammond. Hammond is currently being held in the Greene County Jail with no bond. Rievley is currently being held on an unrelated Webster County warrant for Failure to Appear.
The Greene County Prosecutor’s Office cautions that the charges contained in the felony complaint are merely allegations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
Detectives continue to investigate and are asking anyone who has information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869- TIPS (8477).
