East University Street apartment fire results in fatality

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Shortly after 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, the Springfield Fire Department responded to reports of a building fire in the 2800 block of East University Street and arrived to find a fire in an apartment. While firefighting operations were underway, firefighters located and removed 66-year-old Larry Woodcock and transported him to Mercy’s burn unit. Woodcock died from his injuries on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020.
This was the fourth residential fire fatality, and the seventh fire fatality overall, in Springfield in 2020. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
