SGCHD pauses use of Johnson & Johnson vaccine; more information to come for local recipients

news flash - vaccine update

The Springfield-Greene County Health Department, following the direction of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and the recommendation of the CDC and FDA, has paused the administration of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine out of an abundance of caution. There have been six reports of blood clotting in individuals who received the vaccine, out of seven million doses administered nationwide. None of these reported incidents are in Greene County.

Approximately 7,000 people in Greene County have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine since its approval by the FDA, including more than 6,100 during the Health Department’s mega vaccination clinic at Missouri State University last week. There have been no cases reported locally to the Health Department of incidents involving blood clotting with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

More information should be available following the CDC’s Advisory Council on Immunization Practices meeting, set to take place tomorrow. Those who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at the COVID-19 Mega Vaccine Event last week will receive an email or letter from the Springfield-Greene County Health Department in the coming days with more information. In the meantime, those with questions or concerns are encouraged to speak with their doctor or call our COVID-19 Call Center at 417-874-1211.
