Local health departments encourage community to celebrate graduations safely

News release image

Sports, concerts, prom and graduation... we’re all excited to get back to normal life.  No one wants to miss the big moments due to quarantine or illness. With these milestones on the line, local public health departments are encouraging the entire community to Celebrate Safely this graduation season.

The Springfield-Greene County Health Department has released updated COVID-19 prevention guidance to help families Finish Strong as we approach the end of the school year. The guidance can be found at health.springfieldmo.gov/graduation and includes tips for individuals and families to consider when planning graduation celebrations and trips and other end of year milestone events.

The best way to celebrate safely is to get vaccinated. Students ages 16-18 are currently eligible to receive the Pfizer vaccine. Parents are strongly encouraged to get their older teens vaccinated.

The Pfizer vaccine is available at the joint Health Department and Jordan Valley Community Health Center Vaccination Clinic. There are opportunities for older teens to receive the Pfizer vaccine daily throughout the community. A full calendar of opportunities can be viewed and appointments can be scheduled at vaccine417.com or by calling the COVID-19 Regional call center 417-874-1211. Getting students vaccinated not only protects them from serious illness, but also those around them.

In addition to encouraging vaccine, the guidance includes the up to date guidance for fully vaccinated individuals from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many of these updated guidelines may positively impact celebration plans, such as not having to quarantine if exposed to a positive individual and being able to safely remove a mask while outdoors or while around other vaccinated individuals indoors. There are also additional suggestions for hosting a safe event such as planning activities outdoors, encouraging social distancing, and encouraging mask use by unvaccinated guests.

The community is encouraged to help us meet our Finish Strong goal of vaccinating 50% of the population by Memorial Day. For us to meet this goal, we need everybody to do their part to keep up the pace to ensure we Finish Strong.
