Health Dept. reports no new COVID-19 deaths for May 5-11

COVID-19 News

The Springfield-Greene County Health Department is encouraged to report zero new COVID-19 fatalities among Greene County residents for the May 5-11, 2021 reporting period.

This is the third time in 42 weeks that the Health Department has reported no new COVID-19 deaths in Greene County.

A total of 430 Greene County residents have died from COVID-19.

Vaccine opportunities

The Health Department attributes decreases in reported fatalities and overall COVID-19 case numbers to more individuals getting vaccinated.

Since vaccine has become more widely available in our community, the number of COVID-19 fatalities has drastically fallen from a peak of 98 in December 2020 to four in April 2021 – a 96% decrease in monthly deaths.

COVID-19 deaths by month

"These numbers are evidence that the vaccines are highly effective in preventing severe illness from COVID-19,” said Acting Director of Public Health Katie Towns. “Individuals in our community are doing their part to not only slow the spread of this virus and the variants, but to save the lives of loved ones. We are one step closer to finishing strong with each vaccine that is given.”

Additionally, just 2% of Greene County residents who’ve tested positive for COVID-19 since January were fully vaccinated, according to local data.

Individuals can register and schedule an appointment for a COVID-19 vaccine through the Health Department by visiting covidvaccine.mo.gov/navigator or by calling our COVID-19 call center at (417) 874-1211. Although pre-registration is encouraged, walk-ins are welcome at any one of the clinics hosted by the Health Department.
