Fire Department completes third week of Fire Prevention Month visits to schools

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Springfield Fire Department has successfully completed the third week of Fire Prevention Month for elementary students in Springfield. Firefighters visited 44 public and private schools and met with more 9,000 students to discuss fire safety lessons.

“We are grateful for the relationship the fire department has with our educators in Springfield. Through this partnership, we are able to deliver age-specific fire safety and prevention messages to the children of our community,” said Fire Chief David Pennington.

Throughout the month of October, fire companies are scheduled to visit each elementary school in Springfield. Students will have material sent home with them so they are able to share with their parents what they have learned about fire safety.

One message firefighters shared with students this month is the importance of working smoke alarms and what to do if they sound. Families are encouraged to practice home fire escape plans at least twice a year.
