FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
One of Springfield’s major roadways is getting a facelift this fall. City construction contractor Blevins Asphalt Construction Co. will begin the resurfacing of Sunshine Street between Kansas Expressway and Glenstone Avenue beginning Oct. 25. The project is anticipated for completion in December (weather permitting).
Blevins plans to begin resurfacing work in the eastbound lanes of Sunshine between Campbell Avenue and National Avenue. The contractor is expected to begin placing message boards and cones on Oct. 25, with the removals of the top layers of pavement and laying of asphalt to begin soon after.
Motorists can expect at least one lane in each direction to be open at all times, but traffic delays can be anticipated. Please obey all posted signage and use caution while traveling through the work zone.
Approved by voters in 2019, the resurfacing of Sunshine Street is part of a Major Roadway Resurfacing project also including portions of Battlefield Road (between Kansas Expressway and Glenstone Avenue) and National Avenue (between Kearney and Sunset streets). The resurfacing of Battlefield and National are scheduled for spring of 2022.
The project is funded through federal Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) funds and the ¼-cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax. The total cost of the major roadway resurfacing project is $2.9 million, with the Sunshine portion estimated to cost $824,000.
