Historic City Hall will be illuminated with green lights in observance of National Injury Prevention Day on Thursday, Nov. 18.
Across the nation, leading injury and violence prevention organizations are working together to help reduce preventable injuries. The National Center for Health Statistics found that unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for Americans aged 1-44 years old. That includes traffic crashes, falls, unintentional poisoning (including opioid overdoses), drownings, injuries from guns and more.
Mandy Buettgen-Quinn, a traffic safety specialist for Public Works, has represented the City of Springfield in the local Safe Kids coalition for almost 15 years.
“Whether it be at home, play or on the road, it is important that everybody develops a culture of safety. Unintentional injuries are often tragic but are 100% preventable," says Buettgen-Quinn. “Prevention starts with you: Learn how to fit that bike helmet correctly, buckle up each time and make sure to drive at responsible speeds, check car seats, and poison safety resources. Safety is a choice and educational resources are readily available - for traffic safety and in all other areas of safety.”
