The Springfield-Greene Health Department will begin offering limited testing and treatment services for sexually transmitted infections (STI) next week. The Health Department STI clinic has been closed since early 2020 due to capacity restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The program’s purpose is to prevent the spread of STIs (also called sexually transmitted diseases or STDs) through confidential testing and treatment. When left untreated, STIs can cause serious health issues, so it is important that all cases are properly treated and others in need of testing and possible treatment are identified as soon as possible.
The Health Department STI program offers testing for:
Limited walk-in testing will be available every Monday from 8 am until 2 pm or until all testing slots have been filled. It is recommended that people coming in the afternoon call ahead to ensure that there is still availability. The STI program can be reached by calling 417-864-1684, and more information can be found at health.springfieldmo.gov/STI.
According the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services for 2020, the last full year that data is available, 89 people in Greene County tested positive for syphilis, 1,073 for gonorrhea, 1,879 for chlamydia. In 2019, more than 1,035 residents of southwest Missouri were living with HIV or AIDS.
Since pausing the STI program, the Health Department has referred all patients to AIDS Project of the Ozarks and Jordan Valley Community Health Center for testing and treatment. APO and JVCHC should be recognized for their hard work to meet the increased demand that resulted from the Health Department pausing STI-related services.
