Amanda Ohlensehlen has been named the City of Springfield’s director of Economic Vitality, effective March 28. Ohlensehlen most recently served as the community & economic development manager for the City of New Bern, North Carolina. Learn more about Amanda's qualifications and experience here.

City of Springfield staff from the departments of Economic Vitality and Public Works will provide an update on the status of several ongoing Commercial Street TIF projects and will collect feedback via comment cards. Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions and meet design consultants with BRP Architects. 
 
Projects that will be discussed include:

  • Directional signage to the Commercial Street district
  • Parking Lot Improvements at Pacific St. and Campbell Ave. and Pacific St. and Robberson Ave.
  • District gateway elements
  • Schematic design of the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge Plaza
  • Commercial Street Art Collection Plan

The event will be come-and-go, with a brief staff presentation planned for 6:15 p.m.

Upcoming Bass Pro World Fishing Fair to have substantial economic impact on Springfield

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Bass Pro Shops is hosting the World's Fishing Fair March 30-April 3. Organizers estimate up to 500,000 visitors to the event, including 125,000 new visitors to Springfield and an economic impact to the community of $18 million. Learn more about the event here.

Council expected to vote on Brody Corners TIF Monday evening

At its March 7 meeting, City Council is expected to vote on a special ordinance to create a tax increment financing (TIF) plan to pave the way for the redevelopment of a blighted 28-acre tract at the northwest corner of West Sunshine Street and James River Freeway. The proposed project, called Brody Corners, will be a $27 million retail, restaurant and office development. Learn more.
