EPA Region 7 visit highlights Springfield's brownfields priorities

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 representatives Jeffrey Hughley, DeAndre Singletary, Stanley Walker and Alma Moreno Lahm visited Springfield last week and met with Mayor Ken McClure, City Manager Jason Gage, Deputy City Manager Maurice Jones and City staff to discuss the importance of the City's brownfields program. They visited several catalyst project sites including the Renew Jordan Creek project to daylight Jordan Creek between Boonville and Main, the Forward SGF subarea of East Trafficway, the decommissioned James River Coal Power Plant at Lake Springfield and The Fairbanks. EPA representatives also met with City Workforce Development's Green for Greene brownfields job training program staff and graduates to hear first-hand how EPA’s investment in this program is improving lives.

Business incentive loans help local entrepreneurs achieve their dreams

All of these businesses were able to open their doors or expand with help from the Department of Economic Vitality in the form of business incentive loans through the City's commercial loan program. City issues request for qualifications for Lake Springfield master plan

The City of Springfield is seeking qualified professionals to help prepare a vision and master plan for the redevelopment of the Lake Springfield area. Details are posted online at lakesgfmasterplan.com under the RFQ tab.

The City received a one-time grant from the Economic Development Administration (EDA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce to fund hydrological and environmental evaluations of the James River and Lake Springfield, and develop, with public engagement conducted by City staff, a plan for the reuse of the power plant, lake, and surrounding acreage. Qualified teams will have subject matter experts in areas including, but not limited to, hydrology, dam safety, water resource management, local transportation, brownfields redevelopment, economic vitality, community planning and community recreation.
