David Pennington was appointed Springfield’s interim fire chief on Jan. 27, 2017,  and was appointed fire chief on May 28, 2017. He began his fire service career as a volunteer firefighter with the Logan-Rogersville Fire Protection District in 1994, and became a part of the City of Springfield Fire Department in 1998. He promoted to the ranks of Rescue Specialist, Truck Company Captain, Fire Captain, and Battalion Chief. As Battalion Chief, he served in the Operations Division and as the Chief of Special Operations, and as the Acting Assistant Fire Chief of the Training Division. He became the Assistant Fire Chief of Operations in 2010. Chief Pennington has been awarded designation as a Chief Fire Officer through the Center for Public Safety Excellence, and was selected as the 2015 Springfield Fire Department Fire Officer of the Year. He is a member of the Class of 2018 IAFC Fire Service Executive Development Institute. He has served as a member of the faculty in the Department of Communication at Missouri State University since 2005.

Educational Background: B.S., Organizational Communication, Missouri State University; M.S., Administrative Studies, Missouri State University; Graduate Certificate in Public Management, University of Missouri-Columbia.

Professional Affiliations: Chief Pennington is a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, IAFC-FSEDI, Missouri Valley Fire Chiefs Association, Queen City Fire Chiefs Association, Region-D Regional Homeland Security Oversight Committee.

Community Involvement: Chief Pennington is active throughout the community, serving on the Board of Directors for the Ozark Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Leadership Springfield Board of Directors, Community Partnership Board, and the Community Investment Panel for the United Way of the Ozarks. He is active in the region as Vice-Chair of the Regional Homeland Security Oversight Committee, and at the State level as the Missouri Association of Fire Chiefs fire service representative to the advisory board for the Missouri Information Analysis Center (MIAC).
