1. How much do smoke alarms cost?: Smoke alarms are inexpensive to buy. Many models range in price from $10 to $20

2. Where can I purchase a smoke alarm?: Smoke alarms can be purchased at most hardware and department stores.

3. How many should my home have?: The Springfield Fire Department and National Fire Protection Association recommend that a smoke alarm be placed in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including your basement.

4. What is the difference between an ionization smoke alarm and photoelectric smoke alarm?: Smoke alarms utilizing ionization technology generally activate faster in fast-flaming fires. Smoke alarms utilizing photoelectric detection technology generally activate fast in smoldering fires. While a properly installed and maintained alarm of either technology provides a critical baseline of protection, the Springfield Fire Department strongly recommends the installation of at least one smoke alarm of each type or the installation of dual-sensor alarms, which utilize both technologies.

5. I cannot afford a smoke alarm. What should I do?: Contact the Springfield Fire Department at 417-864-1699 or fill out an application for a free smoke alarm and/or battery.

6. How do I maintain my alarms?: Smoke alarms should be tested monthly. The battery should be replaced at least once a year and the alarm should be replaced at least every 10 years.

7. I am a renter and my landlord has not installed a smoke alarm. What should I do?: Contact the Springfield Fire Department immediately at 417-874-2300. The fire code adopted by the City of Springfield requires that owners/landlords of rental property provide smoke alarms in property rented or leased or otherwise provided to the public for housing or sleeping accommodations.

8. I am hearing-impaired. Are there alarms available for me?: Yes. The Springfield Fire Department offers free smoke alarms for hearing impaired residents. They are louder than traditional alarms and come with an added strobe light for additional notification. If you would like a hearing impaired smoke alarm installed at no charge, please fill out an application.
